South Strand/ Surfside Beach Lions

.

The South Strand Lions Club was chartered on March 19, 1984. In the early 2000’s the club was nearly dissolved due to the loss of all but 3 members. Thanks to the energies of PDG Brian P’Poole and the late Dick Cruse the club was revived and membership grew over the next 23 years. The club now has 21 members.

The club had many activities this year. On Sept 11 the flag was displayed on HWY 17 business in Surfside Beach. In October, they participated in the Surfside Family Festival, selling brooms.. In December, the South Strand Club participated in the Surfside Beach Christmas Parade. A vision screenings was held in September at ST James Elementary and Seaside Elementary schools.  The Peace Poster contest was held at the St. James Middle School, where awards were granted to the two finalists and a gift was given to the art department at the school. The club also became a partner in education at the middle school. Brooms were sold at the Blessing of the Inlet in May. Scholarships were awarded to two worthy students from St James High School and Socastee High School.

The highlight of the club’s fundraising is the annual Golf tournament. This year it was held at  the International club in Murrells Inlet in May.

Social events included a Christmas dinner with spouses and a members award night held in June. This year the club will celebrate its 40 th anniversary in March.
